Response to "Doctor" Peter A. Lipson

karajou <bmac...@excite.com>, Tue, 19 Jun 2007 10:31:27 -0700:

I would like to put a rebuttal to a specifc portion of Simon's CP
article on the main talk page, but it might be inflamatory, so I need
a consensus on this:

"For the record, he was registered as "PalMD" in both CP and
RationalWiki, and this man has engaged in editing that made all of us,
as you indicated in your article, question his credentials.  It was
not just the breast cancer article he tried to do; his edits in other
articles of a medical nature lead us to believe he was more of a quack
than a doctor.  He spent a lot of time in CP, and when he got blocked,
spent an even larger amaount of time in RW.  This time included re-
entering CP under different nicks and engaging in vandalism.  The
amount of time he spends doing that equates to less time doing his
internship, which just says a lot about his own medical
qualifications, if he indeed has any."

It doesn't have to be exact, but this is pretty much what I want.

Add this to it:

Dr. Lipson is not the only doctor in the house, and never was. Allow me
to introduce myself fully: Terry A. Hurlbut, MD. And I say, from my
elementary training in the pathological basis of disease, that if you
knock a woman's hormones out of whack, you /will/ put her at risk for
the development of carcinoma of the breast, among other cancers. For him
to deny the link between abortion and breast cancer can only be
politically motivated.

And for his information, I could probably find a dozen papers in the
medical literature /strongly/ suggesting that such a link exists. I'll
tell you about one paper that I /did/ find, years ago when I was
researching possible causes of breast cancer while preparing to testify
in a divorce matter. That paper said that when the man in a woman's life
acts like a jerk (or, as the French author put it, engages in
/comportment negatif/), he puts the woman at risk for breast cancer. And
/any man who dismisses a woman's concern about a problem pregnancy with
a suggestion that she get an abortion, is acting like, and being, a jerk
in my book./

So: even if I grant Dr. Lipson's /bona fides/ as a physician, I have
this to say to him, /as/ a fellow physician: I defy him, or any other of
my former colleagues, to suggest that any woman can foul up her hormonal
balance, by having an abortion or by any other method, with impunity.

In sum, Dr. Lipson might /think/ that his denial of the link is
incontrovertible. But I controvert him, and I say that his
un-corroborated word on the subject is valueless.

And Ms. Simon betrays the typical failing of a modern reporter by
failing to challenge Dr. Lipson's assertion, or even to research the
question herself to see whether his assertion was controversial or not.

Terry A. Hurlbut, MD

In response to your posting here, all I have to say, from a layman's
point of view, that PalMD acted like a damn quack!

I wouldn't let him treat my dog, let alone me.

You guys should consider putting these comments on [[Talk/Breast Cancer]],
where followers of the LA Times article will find it.

karajou <bmac...@excite.com>, Tue, 19 Jun 2007 15:13:00 -0700:

That of course has to be worked on.  When I first proposed it, Andy
was pretty leery of it (see other post).

"Terry" <terry.92...@gmail.com>, Tue, 19 Jun 2007 15:16:18 -0700:

Dang!

Which other post, of the 6 dozen?  :p

Where I first proposed it (look down a few postings).

But a qualified doctor woud be better at doing this rebuttal anyway,
as PalMD might get a little mad if I publicly call him a
quack...well...maybe that's his problem!
