Thanks for the reply.

Your view of President James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr., might in and of
itself be slightly exaggerated. But your wholesale erasure of virtually
the entire contents of the page in favor of a /one-sentence/ evaluation
of him is unacceptable in any scholarly endeavor.

Furthermore, we do not put such evaluations of people /in the article
itself/. Instead, we sometimes write /essays/ that are /explicitly
labeled/ as evaluations of their subjects, rather than dry factual
recitations.

I could no more permit saying nothing about Jimmy Carter except that
someone thinks he's the worst US President ever, than I could permit the
same treatment of Ronald Reagan.

If you want to sign on again, it's going to be difficult. Replacing an
entire page is the sort of thing that gets anybody blocked for infinite
or at least for a very long time. You'll have to make a very strong
case, and I'll still have to pass that along to my colleagues and ask
their advice. At a bare minimum I'll want your pledge that you will
never again replace an entire page with a sarcastic evaluation of the
page's subject (whether that subject deserves such an evaluation or
not). And I'm sure that Andy Schlafly and my colleagues will want the
same thing.

If you will be so kind as to write back and offer an apology and an
explanation for your behavior, I will pass it on. Then if we decide to
unblock you, you'll get a notice of that fact in e-mail--or you should
be able to get such notice by setting your user preferences. (Blocking
means only that you may not edit, not that you may not sign in.)

I heartily agree with you.

Very nice email Terry.

My full support, Terry.

Also, there is a technical feature, an option we can activate, that
lets blocked users edit their own user talk page. Sometimes it may
benefit our project to allow sysops to dialog publicly with blocked
users. (If they won't shut up, we can always protect their page.)

I did this with one obnoxious guy at Wikipedia, but it got me de-
sysoped. (Although, paradoxically, the arbcom blocked the other guy
for 6 months in the same decision.) Apparently, I did the right thing
but I had not enough authority to do it.

An update: I've heard nothing further from this user other than about
three bitter lines. I suspect that he was a scam artist. The scam would
be to replace the page with a one-sentence insult against a liberal and
see whether we would be foolish enough to let that stand. But rather
than accuse him directly, I addressed him as though I were taking him at
his word, while letting him know that such behavior is unacceptable
regardless of motive.

And that's the right way to do it, too.
