Tom Moore and Phil Scheur blocking decisions

aschla...@aol.com, Wed, 07 May 2008 19:40:13 -0400:

I defer to the consensus here about these blocking decisions.? I don't personally know the vast majority of contributors, or even the majority of our Sysops!

That said, I agree with the decision to block Tom Moore but respectfully disagree with the decision to block Phil Scheur, based on my review of their edits.

Tom Moore has already been blocked three times by Ed Poor, and Tom Moore has added nothing to our project.? I question whether that common name is even his real one.? His response to valid criticisms have been worse than Ames' replies.? As Dean says, a two-week block at this point was lenient.

Phil Scheur, who probably is using his real name, has some stellar edits to entries such as Christopher Columbus, Rick Santorum and Barack Obama.? Phil Scheur's edits to Sesame Street may seem a bit out of line, but that is a show that has long pushed unusual multiculturalism on kids.? That's not a big deal to most people, but it shouldn't be shocking to recognize it either.? At any rate, one or two questionable edits amid many good ones seem forgivable.

That's my two cents.

Hi Andy,

Without adding an opinion on Phil, I do wish to provide more information
since I previously blocked him for a day.  Here were the edits that caused
me to initiate that block:

http://www.conservapedia.com/index.php?title=Lamborghini
<http://www.conservapedia.com/index.php?title=Lamborghini&diff=prev&ol...
7093> &diff=prev&oldid=437093   (He links the car name "Diablo" to  "Satan")

http://www.conservapedia.com/index.php?title=Led_Zeppelin
<http://www.conservapedia.com/index.php?title=Led_Zeppelin&diff=437129...
=274871> &diff=437129&oldid=274871  (Here he links "Jones Paul Jones", a Led
Zeppelin member - with his intelligence I'd have to imagine he knew there
was a more famous John Paul Jones it would be directing to)

Here is a copy of my interaction with him after his block in its entirety,
the bottom coming first:

Bill/Learn,

I will certainly choose to avoid humor in the future.  I do hope that in
return you will avoid impugning my intent, which is genuine.  I'm happy to
discuss any of my edits, which I believe to be of substance.  I think
requesting an explanation is appropriate, before a revert - unless of course
an edit is blatant vandalism.

regards,
Phil

Hello Phil,

You made a couple of other edits that also verged on 'humor'.  John Paul
Jones?  I think one day in this situation is appropriate.  If you come back
without the humor it won't be held against you.  You can, and hopefully will
be, a productive editor to the site.  We could use people like you with your
knowledge.  I hope that is the course that you will choose.

This dialog with Phil Scheur is somewhat disturbing.  He could be a "provocateur" who tries to make our site look bad with outrageous edits/claims.

I withdraw my prior criticism of his block.

Thanks much for your superb analysis here and elsewhere, Bill.

What reason do you have for questioning his name?  As you said, it is a common one, so there's every chance it is genuine.

Also, I have said a few times now that I don't believe most or all of his blocks were justified.

More than a quarter of his edits are to mainspace, and a sampling of half a dozen of them showed them to be good edits.  It's not true to say that he has added nothing to Conservapedia.
